CLAIRE ROUSAY // Live + Interview // STOCK FOOTAGE #11

A B O U T : Claire Rousay is based in San Antonio, Texas. Her music zeroes in on personal emotions and the minutiae of everyday life -- voicemails, haptics, environmental recordings, stopwatches, whispers and conversations -- exploding their significance. rousay has released music on a range of labels, most notably Astral Spirits, Second Editions, Longform Editions and American Dreams, who in 2021 released a softer focus, a collaboration with visual artist Dani Toral. rousay’s music has received acclaim from NPR, which writes that rousay “enchants the ordinary,” and Pitchfork, which calls her music “quietly devastating.” rousay has presented music at Audiograft Festival, Casa Del Lago (CDMX), Issue Project Room, Rewire Festival, and Salon De Normandy (Paris), among many others, held residencies at Rhizome DC and Elastic Arts Exposure Series, and performed with musicians such as Ken Vandermark, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, Jacob Wick and Theodore Cale Schafer. GERMANAGER // STOCK FOOTAGE Live show + Interview

Germanager, aka Alex Germains, is a Liverpool-based composer, performer, and audiovisual artist. ABOUT GERMANAGER: I come from a family of circus performers and orchestral musicians, and have been soaking up both populist and non-populist forms of entertainment since my earliest recollections. Spending countless hours during my childhood hanging around "behind the scenes" of circuses and orchestras, watching the ways in which artistic and cultural behaviours are organised with audience response at the forefront of the performers’ considerations, instilled in me a deep empathy for ‘providing’ entertainment for the public. The strange situations in which artists often find themselves; at once beholden to the public gaze, and yet engaged in our personal quests for self-expression and creative exploration. We want to say something, to someone… Reconciling the two ideas – self-expression and audience fulfilment. These two aspects of the human experience have always overjoyed, mystified, pained, and pleasured me. It is, however, only since I began to study culture in an academic sense, circa 2007, that I have really started to contemplate what it is I have been doing all this time, and more importantly, why I have been doing it.This merging of practical artistic expression with critical investigation has underpinned my artistic outpourings ever since. In particular, my teenage journey, moving from the aforementioned populist and uncritical, into forging an identity, searching for my ‘tribe’, taking in hip hop and then ‘indie’, led to the Mountaineers project (Deltasonic/Mute, 1999-2005). This foray into the genuine music industry, often with wildly varying responses, aptly describes the character of a person who often falls between two stools. We were neither fully pop, nor fully experimental. At the time, we thought we could be all things to all people. Perhaps in this new artistic era, we can. But back then, ‘know your audience, and aim at them’ was what we learnt! Plus, my indie self-consciousness trounced my populist upbringing, and gave birth to a performer that secretly wanted to please, but didn’t see why he should do it on anyone else’s terms… … and so we retired, hurt, into obscurity, until academia beckoned. Having come to terms with these events, I feel freer than I ever have, and embrace the new newness of post-postmodernism, the end of irony, and hope that I can find an audience in the bosom of the internet!I make music, perform live, preferably improvised if possible, and also make short films, with my own music, usually unedited or synchronised, laid over the images. Then I wait to see what random synergies occur in the mind of the beholder. I like to talk about this, but prefer to do it in hindsight, and so I leave u with a quote from Walter Benjamin…‘I need say nothing, only exhibit’… LISTEN / DOWNLOAD: https://germanager.bandcamp.com/ FOLLOW: https://www.facebook.com/germanagermusic/ https://twitter.com/alexgermains https://www.instagram.com/alexgermains/ __________________________________________________ Check out STOCK FOOTAGE for more: http://stock-footage.co.uk __________________________________________________ STOCK FOOTAGE: Curator & Presenter // Joel C Murray Camera/Edit // Tommy Husband Live Sound Recordist & Sound Mix // Rory Ballantyne Lighting Design // Venya Krutikov Stock Footage Artwork // Hannah Bitowski THANKS: Lee Isserow + Vessel Studios // Ben Dempsey Sawin __________________________________________________ FOLLOW STOCK FOOTAGE: Web: http://stock-footage.co.uk Mailer: http://eepurl.com/hzg8oH Instagram(s): http://instagram.com/stockf00tage + http://instagram.com/kazimierstockroom ________________________________________________________________________ ABOUT STOCK FOOTAGE: We’re very grateful to the Cultural Recovery Fund distributed by Arts Council England for making this project possible, also to the Music Venues Trust for their support throughout the uncertainty of the last 18 months or so. PADDY STEER // STOCK FOOTAGE - Live show + interview

The first Stock Footage Live (with an actual audience) features the incredible Paddy Steer. Performance: 00:00 Interview: 1:17:17 ABOUT PADDY STEER Paddy Steer is a Zelig-like character along the timeline of Manchester’s musical activity. It’s a testament to his musicality that he has played with such a wide range of music and artists over the years, be it as a bass player, drummer, Hawaiian guitarist etc. or all these roles at the same time. In rejection of the notion of ‘immaculate reproduction’, live performances from Paddy’s own project err more daringly and admirably on the frontier of chaotic abstraction, expression and focussed blunder, dice rolling down the hill in case of duende, as from behind his stacked array of instruments, the anarchically intrepid punk gargles through a vocoder with his xylophone, all a-clatter under disco lights and doilies. He creates his tools, as he creates his craft, here from scratch, there from new, ever from long-garnered experience that includes running the massive ensemble Homelife, years hence. In style he is unique on the circuit that knows him, on which similarly his blinkered resolve and capacity to create must be unparalleled. This has been reduced down over a long period of time, and applied coat by coat with subtle mastery, for richness, depth, and vivid texture, as if it were some magnificent curry, or a samurai sword. Lounge, romp, deep groove, homely and galactic-expedition whimsy, furry electronic invention, it feels akin to playing and winning a computer game made from reality, to hear. STOCK FOOTAGE // HYPERDAWN

Stock Footage presents an extra special bonus episode featuring the intricate dreamscapes of Manchester’s Hyperdawn. 00:00 - Millennial Pink 08:15 - Avalanche 17:00 - Steady * 23:37 - Interview *The duo are joined by Bunny Hoova on the final track. __________________________________________________ ABOUT HYPERDAWN: Hyperdawn is the moniker of Salford based experimentalists Michael Cutting and Vitalija Glovackyte. Off the back of their prolific individual projects, ranging from multimedia performances to studio releases, orchestral works to solo live sets, the duo has steadily developed a distinctive voice as Hyperdawn, forging modified keyboards, homemade instruments and reel to reel tape recorders. Their debut album Bleach takes their physical, process-based aesthetic with imperfections of warped tape and faltering hardware and pushes it towards the boundaries of pop music. Hints of verse-chorus structures are now apparent with the use of Vitalija’s voice as an essential introduction, giving the duo’s rough grained instrumentals a new level of poignancy. While the reel to reel machines provide the album’s characteristic sound, this isn’t music for the analogue purist. Digital processes have their place here, countering the warmth of valve amplifiers with glitchy pitch-bending effects, matching un-quantised tape loops with high frame-rate playback. Bleach displays a delicate balance between new and old, skeletal and substantial, rigour and recklessness. The result is a broken pop music borne out of hours of improvisations and experimentation that feels at once completely foreign and entirely familiar. Ambiguous textures and structures are contextualised by Vitalija’s confident vocal delivery. Beats are left off-kilter, intonation is approximate, while clicks and pops protrude over decaying instrumentals, suggesting music that is already disintegrating in time. Michael and Vitalija have taken their live show to venues and festivals across the UK, US, Canada and Europe as well as had their music broadcast on BBC Radio 3 (Late Junction), NTS Radio and Berlin Community Radio amongst others. Their first album Bleach was released on September 2019 via Them There Records, followed by a headline European tour. Episode #5 of Stock Footage features prog-math quirksters Unstoppable Sweeties Show playing live at the Kazimier Stockroom, Liverpool. 00:50 Albino Dino 04:16 Christmas with the Smurgs 08:34 IMPROV! 14:00 My Dog is a Cat 17:18 Spider Solitaire 21:30 Interview ABOUT UNSTOPPABLE SWEETIES SHOW: Back in spite of popular demand, this five-piece play avant-garde jazz punk rock and have a lot of fun doing it. The third album from Liverpool avant-garde punksters Unstoppable Sweeties Show eschews the prog-punk morals of their first two albums and instead pokes a curious nose into improvisation, noise and games. This chaotic yet structured approach was refined on their second album with real-time dice-rolling by Gareth Wyn Jones and note-taking by Probert Dean. '''Analogy to An Allergy' is a freeform epic that careers through noise, tonalism, ambience, tightness, looseness, and ritualistic chants of 'Oh my Lord Jesus', naturally inspired by the church setting. With a kaleidoscopic blend of part-sung, part-rapped experimental bedroom pop, his productions are supercharged with a joyous and deranged energy that that owes as much to Haruomi Hosono as it does to Lil Uzi Vert. With the release of this debut EP, Samuso, Podge establishes a sound that is uniquely his own.
