Fly By Night is a new commission from Culture Liverpool for the annual River of Light festival. Taking inspiration from cathedrals and Moscow underground we settled on the idea to create an underwater transport hub set in the canal. The piece alludes to an abandoned, flooded train station complete with beautiful hand made stained glass windows. Hidden inside the tunnel are a series of high power moving lights playing a tightly choreographed light show of moving beams evoking the sensation of passing trains. Inspiration for the soundtrack came from the incredible world of amateur train enthusiasts on Youtube – expertly documented clips of trains from across the world all with their own unique sonic landscape. Through sampling these clips, musical compositions have been built up incorporating both the sound of the trains themselves and also the accidental background noise of the environment they were filmed in -from snow covered Russian freight trains to crowded Indian commuter lines.
